The International Issues Discussion Series Presents ~ PROSPECTS for PEACE: A Forum on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

For Fall 2009, the IID is excited to host a special series entitled “Prospects for Peace: a Forum on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict”.  As a strictly non-partisan, student-run organization, the IID hopes to create an environment in which this sensitive issue can be discussed in objective and scholarly fashion. With a mix of some of the world’s most renowned experts on the conflict, Prospects for Peace is designed present multiple view points, counter disinformation, educate, and provide an appropriate venue for those in the Ryerson community wanting to ask relevant questions. Please join us this Fall as we welcome some of the brightest minds on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The dates and speakers are as follows:

“The US and the Search for Israeli-Palestinian Peace”

Robert Malley has been Director of the International Crisis Group’s Middle East and North Africa Program since January 2002.   Prior to that, he was a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Until January 2001, Mr. Malley was Special Assistant to President Clinton for Arab-Israeli Affairs and Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs at the National Security Council. In this capacity, he served as a principal advisor to the President and the National Security Advisor at the White House on the Middle East peace process.

“Human Rights in Palestine-Israel: Who’s Accountable”

Nadia Hijab is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Palestine Studies.  She is a syndicated columnist for AgenceGlobal, and a frequent public speaker and media commentator. Hijab’s first book, Womanpower: The Arab debate on women at work was published by Cambridge University Press.  She co-authored Citizens Apart: A Portrait of Palestinians in Israel. She was Editor-in-Chief of the London-based Middle East magazine before moving to New York to join the United Nations.

“Will There Ever Be Peace Between Israelis and Palestinians?”

Dr. Yoram Peri is the Abraham S. and Jack Kay Chair in Israel Studies, and Director of the new Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies, the University of Maryland, College Park.Prof. Peri is a former political advisor to the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and former Editor-in-chief of the Israeli daily, Davar. He founded and served as head the Chaim Herzog Institute for Media, Politics and Society in Tel Aviv University, were he was a professor of Political Sociology and Communication from 2001 to 2009.

Yossi Alpher former Israeli intelligence officer, political consultant, writer, and co-editor of the popular web-based Israeli-Palestinian magazine Bitterlemons will be coming to Ryerson on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in ENG 103 to take part in our special series “Prospects for Peace”.
