I am very pleased to announce the Fall 2017 line up for Ryerson’s International Issues Discussion (IID) series. Please mark your calendars and save the dates for what will no doubt be excellent talks!

Wednesday, September 13 Investigative Journalism in a Dangerous Country

Adela Navarro Bello, Director General of the ZETA Weekly in Tijuana, Baja California, a publication renowned for its exposés of institutional corruption, organized crime and drug trafficking. Several ZETA editors and journalists have been murdered and Navarro has been the subject of multiple death threats during her 27-year career. She received the 2007 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists and the 2011 International Women’s Media Foundation “Courage in Journalism” award. In 2012 Newsweek magazine chose her as one of the world’s 150 most fearless women and Foreign Policy named her among its Top 100 Global Thinkers. In 2013 Forbes chose her as one of the 50 most powerful women in Mexico.
Wednesday, September 27 The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself–While the Rest of Us Die

Garrett Graff, American journalist and former editor of Politico Magazine, editor-in-chief of Washingtonian magazine in Washington, D.C., and instructor at Georgetown University in the Masters in Professional Studies Journalism and Public Relations program. He is the author of Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself–While the Rest of Us Die (2016) and The Threat Matrix: Inside Robert Mueller’s FBI and the War on Global Terror (2011).

Wednesday, November 8 Understanding the Russian Revolution, 100 years ago: What does it mean today?

Jeremy Kinsman, whose 40 year career in the foreign service included appointments as Canadian Ambassador to the Russian Federation (1992-1996), Italy (1996-2000), High Commissioner in the United Kingdom (2000-2002), and ambassador to the European Union (2002-2006). He is one of Canada’s foremost authorities on foreign affairs, appearing regularly on CBC and CTV news, and writing for numerous magazine and papers including Policy Options, Policy, and The New York Times. Since 2009 he has been Resident International Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, and between 2010 and 2017 served as Visiting Distinguished Diplomat with the Department of History at Ryerson University.

Wednesday, November 15 (tentative title) Intelligence Accountability in Canada

Michael Doucet, Executive Director of the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC), an independent agency of the government of Canada that is empowered to oversee and review the operations of Canada’s security service, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). He was also former Chief Information Officer and Chief of Technology Officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and former Senior Liaison Officer to the United States National Security Agency (NSA) with the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) of Canada.

All our events run 6:30 to 8:30 pm and are held in in ENG 103 (George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre: 245 Church Street, at the corner of Gould and Church: see www.ryerson.ca/maps ) at Ryerson University, Toronto.

All are welcome and admission is free. An email and poster advertising each talk will be sent out in advance of the event. Please feel free to circulate notice widely!
