Arne Kislenko

Arne Kislenko is Associate Professor with the Department of History at Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) and an Instructor in the Margaret MacMillan Trinity One International Relations programme at Trinity College, University of Toronto. He teaches modern international relations, including courses on the world wars, the Cold War, the history of espionage, the history of terrorism, comparative foreign policy, and modern Southeast Asia.

He has won numerous teaching awards, including the prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship, Ryerson’s (now TMU) first President’s Award for Teaching Excellence, the inaugural Province of Ontario Leadership in Faculty Teaching Award, and being named Honorary Member of the Golden Key Society. He was also named Ontario’s first “Best Lecturer” following TV Ontario’s first “Academic Idol” series. Arne is the co-founder of the International Issues Discussion (IID) lecture series at Ryerson (now TMU), and remains its manager and faculty advisor. He is also the founder of and faculty advisor to the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) international development experiential learning programme at Ryerson (now TMU). Arne also founded and endowed the Dale W. Nelson Memorial Award, which helps fund history students on international academic exchange.

His books include Culture and Customs of Laos (2009), Culture and Customs of Thailand (2004), and The Uneasy Century (1996). He has helped edit several books and published numerous book chapters and articles on a wide range of topics in modern international relations history, contemporary intelligence/international security studies, and Southeast Asia. He currently serves as an editor for the prestigious journal Intelligence and National Security and is working on several research projects.

He appears regularly in the media commenting on intelligence and security issues, current international affairs, and modern diplomatic history. Before academia Arne served for 12 years as a Senior Officer with Canada Immigration at Pearson Airport in Toronto, dealing with many high profile cases. He has served as a consultant on national security matters for the federal government and as an historical advisor for TV/media programmes and various educational organizations. Arne was the host of the National Geographic documentary series “Living in the Time of Jesus” (2011) and is currently working on international television projects about the history of espionage
